Sponsored by the Tzedek (Justice) Committee. Facilitated by Liz Macedo, Committee Chair, and Rabbi Jon.
Machloket l'shem shamayim, the Talmudic term for “conflict for the sake of heaven”, is a cornerstone of Jewish thought, values, tradition, identity even. As we are all grappling with complicated or shifting ideas and opinions about our relationship to Israel and the current war, it's good to be in community and conversation with each other. How can we help each other have the inner conversations, the conversations with other Jews, the conversations with our friends and allies outside the Jewish community?
The Tzedek (Justice) Committee is hosting a conversation among people who feel connected to Israel, who are shattered by the Hamas atrocities of October 7 and the war since, and who continue to believe that the political and national rights of all Jews and Palestinians in the land are fundamental even though no one can say how to translate those into reality right now. (If the last part isn't your belief, there are other gatherings and programs in the synagogue for that discussion.) If you're interested in a conversation that might be uncomfortable, based in respect, appreciation, and learning – a machloket l’shem shamayim -- please join us for the first of what can become an ongoing meeting. We’ll begin to get to know each other through our thoughts, feelings, stories and questions at this moment around Israel-Palestine.
In-person only.
